The maaseh behind it
Reb Masya ben Charash is the Tanna who stood in the greatest nisayon and blinded his own eyes rather than fail in it. His tziyun hakadosh is in the village of Eilabun in the Galil.
What the shliach does there
The shliach prepares eighteen licht. Before each one he says: "Hareini madlik ner zeh lichvod Reb Masya ben Charash, kedei shebizchuso yiskablu hatefillos", lights one candle, and says kapitel pey-vov. That seder repeats eighteen times. He finishes with the pesukim of "Kra Satan" from kapitel kuf-yud-tes, davens for your yeshuah by name, and then says the gantze sefer Tehillim.
